Ashton Hettiarachi

Futurist · Technologist · Entrepreneur · Inventor · Researcher · Systems Architect

Ashton Hettiarachi is a futurist, technologist, entrepreneur, inventor, researcher and systems architect known for recognising technology patterns early and building into them before mainstream adoption. Across nearly three decades, he has moved from experimental electronics and e-commerce to digital assets, DAG-based blockchains, open Web3 data, distributed infrastructure and artificial intelligence. He has built and led global technology companies and networks, managed large multidisciplinary teams and developer communities, and founded OpenX / OpenxAI, whose network exceeded US$200 million in fully diluted valuation[source] shortly after launch.

Journey

Linked names open the related record on this page. [source] jumps directly to supporting evidence.

Hettiarachi grew up fascinated by engineering, physics and mathematics, while science fiction gave that curiosity a longer horizon. He read Arthur C. Clarke and became particularly captivated by 2001: A Space Odyssey, its intelligent machines, space exploration and vision of technologies that did not yet exist. His edge became pattern recognition across technology cycles: seeing when an idea was moving from curiosity to infrastructure, understanding what was missing underneath it, and starting to build before the wider market caught up.

That instinct appeared early in Kandy, Sri Lanka. At 15, he built a voice-controlled home using a Nokia mobile phone as part of the control system for lights and household appliances. At 16, frustrated by traffic congestion and fixed signals, he developed an adaptive traffic-light system using light sensors to detect traffic and change signal priority. At 17, frustrated by limited access to Western pop music on local radio, he built an FM transmitter and operated Mandakini FM[source] from his bedroom. These were small systems, but the operating pattern was already visible: identify a limitation, understand the technology, build an alternative and make it work in the real world.

After leaving Sri Lanka at 20, Hettiarachi moved to the United Arab Emirates and began building at a much larger scale. Before e-commerce became a mainstream consumer behaviour across the Middle East, he founded Voxlon and built Discount.ae[source], one of Dubai's early large-scale e-commerce businesses. In 2015, while Bitcoin was still outside mainstream finance and Ethereum was only beginning, he was organising Bitcoin and Ethereum meetups and building communities around decentralized technology. In 2016, he founded Blockchain Partners Holdings[source], one of Australia's earliest dedicated digital-asset research businesses. In late 2017 he joined Fantom, then a little-known DAG-based blockchain project, and became Head of Innovation, leading Fantom Innovation Lab through product development, commercialization, payments, smart-city initiatives and international expansion. Fantom raised approximately US$40 million in 2018[source]; in Dubai, Hettiarachi's work included engagements with Smart Dubai, Dubai Future Foundation, Dubai Blockchain Centre[source] and other government and institutional stakeholders around real-world blockchain adoption. He left Fantom in 2019, before the network later grew into a multibillion-dollar ecosystem.

By 2021, he had moved to another infrastructure problem: data. High-resolution crypto and Web3 market data could sit behind licences costing tens of thousands of dollars, and in some cases around US$100,000 per month. He co-created L3 Atom as an open Web3 data initiative and extended that work into Openmesh, a broader open-data and distributed-infrastructure network spanning Xnode, UnifiedAPIs, Pythia X, OpenR&D, distributed compute and validator infrastructure. Openmesh became a major NEAR node operator through Meta Pool, attracted more than 85,000 job applications[source] globally, and in 2023 Hettiarachi helped create and host OpenD/I, a 30-day global hackathon focused on open data, smart contracts, AI and infrastructure with 876 participants and 41 project entries.

Artificial intelligence became the next shift. Hettiarachi founded OpenX / OpenxAI around the thesis that AI would require more than centralized APIs and subscriptions: it would need open models, accessible compute, permissionless deployment, programmable ownership and infrastructure developers could build on directly. OpenX reached US$200M+ in valuation[source], while its ecosystem grew to more than 3,000 active developers and 524 deployed AI projects[source] during the launch period. Across these cycles, Hettiarachi has moved from building electronics alone to building global enterprises, raising and deploying capital, managing hundreds of engineers, researchers, designers, operators and contributors, forming international partnerships and scaling developer ecosystems and technology networks worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Today, he is building a new AI technology stack around what he believes could be a major disruption to the AI industry: Scalable Private Intelligence (SPI)[source]. The idea is intelligence that knows you, evolves with you and moves with you, rather than starting from zero inside a centralized service. SPI is designed to make intelligence persistent across devices, models and infrastructure while keeping memory, identity, preferences, permissions, workflows and data under the user's control. Scalable by design. Private by default. Independent by architecture.

Achievements

  • Founded OpenX / OpenxAI, which reached US$200M+ in valuation[source], then grew to 3,000+ active developers and 524+ deployed AI projects[source] during its 2025 launch period.
  • Joined Fantom during its formative DAG-based blockchain phase and became Head of Innovation[source], leading product innovation, commercialization and government engagement before the network later grew into a multibillion-dollar ecosystem.
  • Built Discount.ae / Voxlon[source] into one of Dubai's early large-scale e-commerce businesses before online retail became mainstream across the Middle East.
  • Founded Blockchain Partners Holdings in 2016[source], one of Australia's earliest dedicated digital-asset research businesses, before institutional crypto research became an established category.
  • Co-created L3 Atom and founded Openmesh, building open-data and distributed-infrastructure systems including Xnode, UnifiedAPIs, Pythia X and OpenR&D. Openmesh became a major NEAR node operator through Meta Pool and attracted more than 85,000 job applications[source] globally.
  • Created and developed the Permissionless AI[source] stack, combining distributed compute, open models, permissionless deployment, programmable ownership, monetization and identity into a full-stack AI architecture.
  • Led Fantom Innovation Lab's Dubai work[source], engaging Smart Dubai, Dubai Future Foundation, Dubai Blockchain Centre and other UAE stakeholders around blockchain-based payments, smart-city systems and government adoption.
  • Helped create and host OpenD/I 2023, a 30-day global hackathon with 876 participants and 41 project entries[source] focused on open data, smart contracts, AI, cryptography and infrastructure.
  • Invented and built electronics and automation systems from his teenage years, including a voice-controlled home, adaptive traffic lights, an independent FM radio station, a digital astrology watch and the Dr. Booth emergency communications unit.
  • Contributed to an early ERC-721 / ERC-1155 composable NFT architecture through the DIGITALAX ecosystem in 2020.
  • Authored and led research across distributed consensus, decentralized microservices, knowledge graphs, smart-order routing, deep reinforcement learning, machine learning, market-data infrastructure and decentralized compute.

Failures & lessons

  • Success attracts people. Adversity reveals them. You learn who is real when money, reputation, pressure or power enters the room.
  • The wrong partner can cost more than the wrong product. Choose who you build with as carefully as what you build.
  • Cash is time. Valuation is not cash. Runway determines how long you can keep building and how much freedom you have to make good decisions.
  • Raise before you desperately need the money. Fundraising from desperation destroys leverage and forces bad choices.
  • Being early can be the same as being wrong. You can correctly see where technology is going and still build the wrong company because the market is years behind you. Timing is part of the invention.
  • The market does not care how hard you worked. Years of research and difficult engineering do not create value by themselves. The product still has to solve a problem somebody cares about.
  • Nobody gives a damn about decentralization. Most people care about price, speed, privacy, reliability, ownership and whether the product works. Decentralization is a means, not the product.
  • Ideology is a terrible product manager. Be loyal to the problem, not the technology.
  • Open source does not automatically mean open. Code can be public while compute, distribution, identity, payments and access remain concentrated.
  • There are evil people in this world. Not every conflict is a misunderstanding. Some people lie, manipulate and exploit when it benefits them. Trust slowly. Document everything. Protect your family, your freedom and your work.
  • God exists. I no longer treat faith as an abstract idea. There are moments when planning, money, logic and control run out. Faith did not.
  • I have been wrong before. I will be wrong again. Some ideas were too early, some assumptions were wrong, and some technically possible systems were not commercially viable. If decades of building do not change your mind, you stopped learning.
